Mason Jar Soap Nuts

What are soap nuts? Soap nuts are actually a berry that comes from trees native to India and Nepal. They contain saponin, a natural surfactant that removes dirt, debris, and odors from clothing. Soap nuts are allergy-friendly, completely natural, antibacterial, and antifungal. In fact, soap nuts can be used as shampoo and body soap!

How do I use soap nuts? Simply place 4-6 soap nuts in the mesh bag (I use five), then toss it in with your laundry. Make sure the mesh bag is tightly closed (my soap nuts fell out of the bag the first time I used them). Soap nuts are “activated” by warm water and agitation. If you are using cold water, first run the soap nuts under warm water to activate them, then put them in the washer. After the laundry load is done, lay the soap nuts out to dry. Soap nuts can be used up to 7 times but when they start to feel soft and get gray in color, it’s time to put them in the compost bin.
